Summary
Q: What is a colonoscopy?
A: It is an endoscopic examination, by a physician, of the entire colon.
Q: What is the purpose of a colonoscopy?
A: Colonoscopies are frequently performed as a screening procedure for the early detection of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Colonoscopies are also used as a diagnostic tool if other tests don't adequately explain symptoms.
Q: What are polyps?
A: Polyps are wart-like growths inside the bowel, most commonly in lower areas. Polyps can progress into cancer. You can have polyps without having any symptoms.
Q: Can't x-rays detect polyps?
A: Often not. The benefit of having a colonoscopy is that polyps found during the procedure can be removed and biopsied (examined for cancer cells).
Q: Is early detection of colorectal cancer important?
A: Yes. If detected early and properly treated, the 5 year survival rate is ca. 90%.
Q: When does colorectal cancer strike and whom?
A: Usually it strikes both men and woman over 50. Screening is recommended for adults over 50 who have no risk factors.
Q: Who is considered at risk for colorectal cancer?
A: Persons who have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps or inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Q: Do all medical insurance companies cover colonoscopies?
A: No. You should check with your insurance, especially about a screening colonoscopy. Many companies don't cover preventive care.
Q: I have Medicare. Am I covered?
A: For the most up-to-date information, go to: http://www.medicare.gov and enter colonoscopy in the Search field.
Q: I have Medicaid. Am I covered?
A: Medicaid covers colonoscopies if medically necessary, but not as a preventive measure.
Q: How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?
A: Your physician will give you all the information you need. Follow the instructions exactly as prescribed to ensure a successful procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.
Q: Does GCMCperform the procedure frequently?
Yes. The procedure is performed almost on a daily basis. Our professional staff is experienced and friendly.
