Laboratory Medicine

The goal of our laboratory is to meet the health care needs of our patient population by maintaining high standards of proficiency testing and providing the medical staff with unlimited diagnostic tests that are timely resulted and definitively accurate.

The laboratory meets the high expectations of its accreditation agency (Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program), the standards of its proficiency testing program (College of American Pathologists), and the mandatory proficiency testing of the PA Department of Health and Center for Medicaid and State Operations grading system. The blood bank is fully accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks, receiving blood products from the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh, and working closely with the ITxM Diagnostics of Pittsburgh to assure blood product safety, screening, and diagnostic reliability.

Lab Team

The laboratory director, Kerry Malloy, has 41 years of experience in orchestrating the use of the advanced technologies of today with the demands of the hospital's expectations of quality assurance of tomorrow.

Clinical laboratory testing includes the state-of-the art instrumentation with every analyte tested. More importantly, it includes the expertise of medical laboratory technologists who are highly-trained professionals that make the operation of this sophisticated laboratory run flawlessly. Their knowledge of applied human biochemistry, biology, and bacteriology helps integrate this field of laboratory medicine into specific test results that are utilized by physicians to care for their patients.

Associated reference laboratory testing is also available with comparable results and turnaround times of less than 24 hours for most analytes; and the expanded availability of such tests as fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and chromosomal analysis (Cytogenetics) are readily available.

Anatomical Pathology

Dr. JancartDr. Robert Jancart, a board-certified pathologist with post-doctoral fellowship expertise, directs the daily microscopic examination of surgical and cytological specimens; rendering definitive diagnoses that are used by treating physicians for the best care of their patients. Tumors are studied by the pathologist using various histochemical and immunohistochemical stains that better define the diseases studied microscopically. Skilled histology technicians provide such staining and tissue preparations that are labor intensive. Many of these stains and molecular studies are also provided by associated reference laboratories offering cutting-edge technologies and 24-to-48-hour turnaround times.

Tumor-board conferences are held biweekly and involve a dynamic interaction between oncologist, pathologist, surgeons, and primary care physicians regarding the diagnoses and treatment plans for their patients. The process includes a formal roundtable discussion with the use of digital images of tumor histology and radiographic images that all focus on our patients' healthcare needs.

Post-mortem examination is also available for ongoing studies that try to explain the diseases our patients may die from, and better prepare our next generation of doctors to meet their patients' health care needs. The post-mortem examination suite has accessory technologies that would meet the needs of a forensic pathologist.
