Maternal Child Health
Helping babies come into the world is the specialty of the Maternal Child Health team at Grove City Medical Center. In fact, they assist with nearly 300 births each year in the homelike atmosphere of the department’s labor and delivery area. Two large, warmly appointed birthing rooms, equipped with private baths, set the ideal tone for family involvement, including dads and siblings. With this in mind, the Department also provides sleeping accommodations in all post-partum rooms for fathers to stay overnight with mother and baby. The unit features eight large private post-partum room for recovery.
In order to make labor as comfortable as possible, telemetry monitors are used so that mothers can walk during labor, which also helps to move the process along more effectively. And when the time draws near, anesthesia services are available around the clock.
Recognizing that the months preceding the birth of a new baby are filled with a wide range of emotion, including excitement as well as anticipation, the Maternal Child Health team conducts a number of educational classes for parents-to-be. The staff, which is entirely comprised of Registered Nurses, offers instructional classes on prepared childbirth, breastfeeding and sibling preparation. All nursing staff is certified in Neonatal Resuscitation.
In addition to a state-required metabolic screening, Grove City Medical Center participates in a supplemental newborn-screening program, which enables infants to be tested for additional metabolic disorders that may not be apparent immediately following birth. Readily identifying such disorders may allow physicians to treat problems before they cause permanent damage.
