Doctor Returns Home To Practice

New to Grove City Medical Center’s medical staff is Dr. Tonia L. Kosek, who will begin seeing OB/GYN patients on August 1 st. A New Castle native, Dr. Kosek attended Grove City College, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology.

Dr. Kosek earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at A.T. University of Health Sciences Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and then completed a Transitional Year of training at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh through the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. During her time in Pittsburgh, Dr. Kosek served on the Board of Directors for “A Hand to Hold.” A Hand to Hold is a non-profit organization that was formed in response to the increasing frequency of infant homicides often referred to as ‘dumpster babies.’ A Hand to Hold is a hospital-based program that offers a confidential alternative to mothers who wish to abandon their babies, unharmed.

Dr. Kosek completed her residency in OB/GYN at Synergy Medical Education Alliance in Saginaw, Michigan, where she also served on the Clinical Faculty of Michigan State University. As part of her residency, she opted to participate in a third-world foreign elective four-week OB/GYN rotation in Pakistan. She divided her time between a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital in the Punjab region and a 30-bed women’s and children’s hospital in the Sindh province. During her time in Pakistan, Dr. Kosek was struck by the lack of medical resources there for women. “The cultural belief system doesn’t allow women to be treated by male physicians, but there is such little educational opportunity for women, it’s practically impossible to cultivate female physicians within Pakistan,” she said. “It’s quite a contradiction.”

Also during her residency, Dr. Kosek traveled to Romania as the licensed physician for a Grove City College pre-med mission trip.

Dr. Kosek is especially pleased to be returning to Western Pennsylvania, where her family lives and to Grove City to practice. “I’m coming back to all the things I’ve missed about the area—especially the warm, caring people here,” she said.

Dr. Kosek will be joining the OB/GYN practice of Drs. William C. Dundore, Jr. and Rand Himes of Wolf Creek Medical Associates at Grove City Medical Center. Appointments may be scheduled with her by calling 724-458-7737.
