WOUND CARE
Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Serena, of Penn North Center, Centers for Advanced Wound Clinics, Grove City Medical Center’s Center for Wound Healing provides specialized wound care. Mary Shannon, CRNP, CWOCN works with Dr. Serena and several physical therapists who have received special certification in wound care to treat patients suffering from deep, slow healing wounds as a result of compromised blood circulation.

Treatments range from topical medications and dressings to infrared heat or electrical stimulation. Recently, the practitioners have been prescribing a new treatment for patients called MIST, which uses ultrasound technology to spray a saline solution onto the surface of a wound. MIST is particularly helpful in removing dead tissue from wounds on the lower part of the leg. “It penetrates much deeper and is far less painful than previous methods,” Mary Shannon explained.
