A Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, or DEXA scan is the most
commonly used test for measuring bone mineral density, and
is one of the most accurate methods of diagnosing Osteopenia
or Osteoporosis in women, as well as men.
Physicians often use the results of a DEXA scan to monitor
the results of bone-loss treatments they may prescribe for
patients.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends women over
65, as well as younger women who are at risk for
osteoporosis and men who may be genetically predisposed to
bone loss receive regular DEXA scans.
